How the Jingle Dress came to be
The Granddaughter of an old medicine man fell deadly ill, he could not heal her with his herbs. As the days passed him sleeplessly at his granddaughter side, he prayed to the Great Spirit for the guidance to help his granddaughter. Falling into a fitful sleep, he dreamed. When he awoke the next morning he gathered the women of the tribe, he told them about his dream and the dress that he had seen with cones that made beautiful music while it danced. He told them that in his dream the spirits said that this dress would heal his granddaughter. The women of the tribe got to work; they made the dress that the Medicine man visions in his dream.
The dress was beautiful with cones of sparkling silver and beadwork to beautiful to be described. The women took the dress to the Medicine man were he sat silently at his granddaughter side. After leaving the women to dress his granddaughter, he called for the drum to gather at the circle. Everyone from the tribe started to gather there to see what was going to happen. The Granddaughter, being carried to the circle, to weak to walk, the drum started to sing a song never sung before and there beaters hit the drum in a way that was never before done. She was carried around the circle twice, with each step she grew stronger. By the third time around, she was dancing on her own with steps that were graceful and new to her, she did not know where the steps had come from but feeling better then she had in weeks. She danced as the drum beat and the cones on her dress jingled in her ears. When the song ended and she walked proudly to her grandfather as he gave a silent thank you to the Great Spirit for healing his granddaughter so well
